Healthcare Giant Abbott Investigating Cyber Incident Following ShinyHunters Claims

Abbott has confirmed that it is investigating a cyber incident involving unauthorized access to a limited number of internal systems used by its Cancer Diagnostics business.

This follows claims associated with the ShinyHunters cybercrime group. The healthcare giant stated that the incident is contained and has not disrupted patient services, laboratory activity, manufacturing, or product availability.

In a statement dated July 16, 2026, Abbott disclosed the issue and emphasized that its broader operations remain unaffected. The incident is linked to ShinyHunters, a financially motivated cybercrime group known for targeting organizations through data theft, credential attacks, and extortion activities.

However, Abbott has not publicly confirmed the identity of the threat actor, the method used to gain access, or whether any data was stolen. The announcement refers only to “unauthorized access” and indicates that the investigation is ongoing.

According to Abbott’s statement, the event is isolated to the Cancer Diagnostics business. The company clarified that other Abbott business units, sites, or systems are not impacted.

Abbott said the incident is limited to legacy Exact Sciences systems, which are separate from its infrastructure, and that it has not affected business operations, manufacturing, laboratory activities, products, or product availability.
