Mozilla has introduced a built-in Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS, allowing iPhone users to block many third-party advertisements and ad-related trackers without downloading a separate browser extension.

The new feature is designed to reduce visual clutter from pop-ups, overlays, and third-party advertising scripts that can slow down browsing or interrupt users while reading web content.

It is optional and disabled by default, giving users control over whether ad blocking is enabled in their browser. Firefox users on iPhone can activate the setting by opening Settings, selecting Browsing, and choosing Ad Blocker.

Mozilla said the feature relies on Apple’s WebKit Content Blocker technology, which allows browsers on iOS to apply rules to prevent selected page resources from loading.

Firefox’s implementation uses EasyList, a widely used community-maintained filter list that identifies advertising domains, ad scripts, tracking elements, and other unwanted page components.

Because blocked resources are prevented from loading, the feature can reduce the number of third-party advertising and tracking requests made during a user’s visit to supported websites.

This may also create a cleaner browsing experience by removing some distracting advertising elements before they appear on screen. Mozilla cautioned that the feature does not block all ads, as website-delivered ads and advertisements in search-engine results may still appear.

The iOS Ad Blocker will not affect sponsored shortcuts, promotional links, or sponsored content that Firefox itself may show on its New Tab page. Mozilla treats those browser-level elements separately from advertisements delivered through third-party web pages.

The new option works alongside Firefox’s existing Enhanced Tracking Protection feature. Enhanced Tracking Protection is designed to block known trackers and limit cross-site tracking activity. At the same time, the Ad Blocker adds filtering focused on advertising-related network requests and page elements.

Mozilla already supports a broad ecosystem of privacy and ad-blocking extensions on Firefox for desktop and Android. Those platforms allow users to install tools that provide customized filtering, anti-tracking capabilities, script controls, and other privacy protections.

Apple’s iOS environment works differently because browser extensions are not available in the same way they are on desktop and Android platforms.

Mozilla said it built the capability directly into Firefox for iOS to provide users with an ad-blocking option without requiring an add-on to be installed.

The release highlights the growing importance of browser-level privacy controls, particularly as online advertising increasingly depends on third-party scripts, analytics platforms, and tracking infrastructure.

Blocking these components can improve privacy, reduce page clutter, and potentially limit exposure to malicious advertising campaigns, commonly known as malvertising.

Mozilla emphasized that advertising remains important for funding publishers, creators, and websites across the open web. By making the feature optional, Firefox aims to balance support for online publishing with user choice over advertising and tracking controls.

Users can report missed ads, website compatibility problems, or unexpected browser behavior through Mozilla Connect.
